Anthony Randazzo

After graduation alumni Tony Randazzo spent 3 years working at a large architectural firm which specialized in the design of theme parks and hospitality projects.

From there he moved in the residential construction industry, working for a local cabinet and millwork manufacture. He assisted large custom home builders and their clients with the design of their kitchens, offices, millwork and cabinetry throughout the home.

For the past 18 years he has worked at “Lighting Associates Inc.”, a Light Manufacture Representative Agency. His responsibilities in specification sales are to assist his clients with the fixture selection for their projects. His clients range from the local specification community, end users, facility managers just to name a few. The role of specification sales has changed to include much more time educating his clients on the changes in LED light fixtures and lighting control technologies that are used in the design of their projects.

What helped you from MU’s Architectural Studies?

“My first 3 semesters at Mizzou were spent in the engineering department before I switched to the HES school. The diversity of the Architectural Studies program is what helped me the most in my career. I went from a class on AIA documents to a class where I selected furniture for a Bed & Breakfast in the same week and I enjoyed every second of it. The diversity in my classes has continued today in my lighting career. Just like any building or space, lighting serves a functional purpose and an aesthetic purpose, it is technical and creative at the same time.

Specification sales means I am involved in all the phases of the project, schematic design, lighting calculations, budgeting, documentation and keeping the job in budget by working with the architect and contractors, answering questions during installation and fixing any problems.

The Architectural Studies program taught me to see all aspects of a project, how the building structure relates to a productive floor plan and finally to the correct lighting solution. When I go into a space I look around and wonder how the space is illuminated, what kind of technology do the light fixture use, how the lighting affects the space when you enter it, how the color of the light affects the color of the space. One of the great things about being in the design industry is what you can learn when you look at any kind of architecture, you see what you like or what you don’t like and how you may of done it differently.”
