Responsibilities

Provide a "mentor"/sponsor
This individual should be one who will be actively involved with the student intern. The sponsor should:

Be prepared to teach
The student is there to learn. Expect to spend some time providing instruction and explanation for tasks being assigned and/or observed.

Provide specific instructions

Clearly communicate responsibilities, sequence of work assignments, expected completion dates, etc.

Expect "real" work

It is assumed that the sponsor, within the scope of their design firm, would strive to make the work experience varied and as meaningful as possible for the student. During the first few days the sponsor should help the student prepare a list of objectives and job expectations for the internship experience. See examples under "Student Responsibilities".

Help student select a project

The student is expected to complete a project during the internship for submittal to the internship advisor. Evaluation of the project will contribute to determining the student's satisfactory/unsatisfactory status at the end of the internship. See complete a project under "Student Responsibilities" for more information.

Evaluate performance

The sponsor is responsible for evaluating the student employee on the Employer Evaluation of Student Intern form provided. It should be sent, along with a letter of evaluation, to the internship advisor:
