Interior Design & Pre-Architecture Option
PORTFOLIO REVIEW: Application for Admission to a Professional Program in Architectural Studies

A limited number of students are admitted to the interior design studio sequence for professional programs in interior design or interior design with the pre-architecture option. For students entering before January 2001, students should apply for admission at the end of the fall semester 2001 for permission to enroll in EDn 181 - Environmental Design Studio. For students entering after May 2001, students should apply for admission at the end of the winter semester of the freshman level in the curriculum for permission to enroll in EDN 181 - Environmental Design Studio. The application consists of two parts: 1) an application form, due on the last day of pre-registration and 2) a portfolio of student work, due the last Wednesday of classes at the end of the semester. Application forms are available early in the semester in a rack outside of the EDn Reception Area, 137 Stanley Hall. Acceptance decisions are based on an enrollment capacity of approximately 40 students, design work and academic achievement:

1. Design Work

  • Submission of selected work from at least two of the studio courses listed under #2
  • Optional: Design work from additional studio courses or creative work done outside of classes
  • Faculty will be looking for 1) quality of work and 2) diversity of work
  • Instructions for submittal of design work and criteria for its review are included on the application form
 

2. Academic Achievement

  • Recommended minimum cumulative 2.50 GPA Students with GPA below 2.50 may apply.
  • ACT score (if available)
  • Satisfactory completion or current enrollment in at least two of
    the following studio courses (or equivalents):
    EDn 120 - Arch. Drafting and Working Drawings
    EDn 110 - Visual Design, or ART 20 Basic Design I, or ART 2 Introduction to Art
    ART 60 - Beginning Drawing

HUMAN FACTORS Electives

Minimum of 3 credit hours may be selected from the following list or other courses should be approved by assigned academic advisor.
NOTE: A choice of HDFS 175 Introduction to Families (3) will also meet 3 credit hours of HES Foundation credits.

Pre-Architecture Option -- Cooperating M Arch Programs with Reciprocity Agreements

University of Kansas

  • Admission based on GPA, letters of recommendation, portfolio
    review and interview.
  • Includes two summer sessions: the first for an introductory
    leveling course prior to entering the MArch program,
    the second a summer session in Italy.
  • MArch completed in 2 1/2 to 3 years.
  • Out-of-state tuition waived for Missouri residents when enrolled in
    MArch program as a first professional architecture degree.
