Admission to Mizzou and declaring a degree in architectural studies is all that is required to join us the first year.
- The first year of our program serves as preparation for the Professional Program. At the end of the first year, students apply for admission to the Professional Program, which starts in year two, by submitting a portfolio of work at the end of the spring semester. This process is selective and based on the following:
- Portfolio Review: Students submit work from the two required first year foundational courses; ARCHST 1100 Visual Design and ARCHST 1200 Drafting.
- Evaluation Criteria: The portfolio is assessed on skills in design principles and elements, design creativity, drafting and lettering, technical accuracy, and craftsmanship.
- Academic Achievement: Overall academic performance is also considered.
- Acceptance Rate: The acceptance rate into the Professional Program varies year to year based on the number of applicants. Our department’s philosophy is that any student whose application demonstrates the necessary skills and potential will be accepted. The instructors of the foundational courses play an advisory role to the faculty admission committee in this process.
- GPA Consideration: We do not have a strict GPA requirement for admission into the Professional Program. Each application is reviewed holistically, considering various factors. However, as a general guideline, we recommend students maintain a GPA above 3.0 during their first year.
- ACT/SAT Requirements: For the Professional Program, we do not have specific ACT/SAT requirements. All students admitted to the University of Missouri are assumed to have met the minimum requirements set by the university.
- Class Size and Teacher-to-Student Ratio: In the Professional Program, our class sizes and teacher-to-student ratios vary depending on the type of course:
- Studio courses generally maintain a 1:18 teacher-to-student ratio.
- Computing courses typically have a 1:25 teacher-to-student ratio.
B.S in Architectural Studies in either Architectural Studies or Interior Design Emphasis is a rigorous, project-based curriculum with 8 semesters of required studios. We can shrink that down to 6 semesters if the student is able to find appropriate coursework in the first year at a different institution to substitute for our first year of studios.
Basically, year 1 at the community college for A+ to cover general eds (English comp 1 & 2, Math 1100 – college algebra, Math 1400 – calculus for non-majors, Am Hist/Pol Sci, Archst 1200 – drafting studio, ArchSt 1100 – 2d/3d design studio, art_dr_vs 1050 – basic drawing class). After the first year, students will submit a portfolio of work to our department for admission into our professional level studios beginning in the Fall of year. Once admitted into the professional studios, it is 6 semesters, only one of these can be taken over the summer.
