Katherine Stockton
Assistant Teaching Professor
Katherine Stockton has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Environmental Design from the University of Missouri-Columbia and a Master of Architecture from the University of Kansas. She has spent much of her career in the world of interior design, architecture, and construction. Her passion lies in community design, sustainability, affordable housing, and advocacy for the AEC profession. Her work for local non-profits to help the underserved populations as well as her devotion to AIA and advocating for young professionals has been the anchor of her career. Since pivoting to academia, she continues to work in these fields, but has increased her involvement in climate-aware and ecologically sensitive design. Her work in the field has been published in Architect Magazine, John Cary’s book, “Design for Good” and has won various awards for both design acumen & community impact.
Kate has two very large dogs, loves to explore the local terrain as well as travel to places both near & far. She enjoys finding unique pockets of the world with vernacular architecture, volunteering with local organizations and constructing things in her spare time.
Teaching Philosophy
Learn to cook before you write the recipe. Design students should have a comprehensive knowledge of materiality, theory, constructability and historic best practices when they go to “write a recipe” for a design. It is our job to not only give them these constantly evolving set of skills to actively problem-solve in our world, but also to make them aware of the large array of possible career paths available to them post-graduation. We act as guides, confidants, conduits to the profession and supporters of them throughout their careers. It is my joy to get to know each one of these students and help to curate a path for them that will most optimally fit their skills, interests and plug them into opportunities that will help them live happy & thriving lives.
MU Architectural Studies is a special place that serves as a nexus for the fusion interior design, architecture, construction management, sustainability, environmental behavior research, and digital fabrication. Nestled in the heart of this large research university is a renowned undergraduate, graduate and PhD program with dedicated faculty & staff who know each student on a personal level. We work as a cohesive team that serves an array of specialties, ranging from sustainability to digital fabrication to building technology and environmental behavior research. Every student that goes through this program has a unique experience that helps them to find their ideal path post-graduation and our goal is that Mizzou Arch Studies is always a homebase that they can come back to throughout their lives.
