Senior Project Interior Designer, Architectural Studies Alumna

Samantha Sondag, a proud alumna of Mizzou’s Architectural Studies program, has built an impressive career as a Senior Project Interior Designer at HOK, a globally recognized design and architecture firm. Graduating in December 2015, Samantha’s journey began with a pivotal mock interview that connected her with HOK’s Director of Design. This chance meeting led to a full-time role and marked the start of a career that seamlessly blends strategic consulting with innovative interior design.

Growing up in a family that values holistic perspectives, Samantha was drawn to Mizzou’s program for its balanced focus on both architecture and interior design. “It felt like finding my family,” she recalls, reflecting on the countless hours spent in the studio and the lifelong friendships formed there. This well-rounded education has been instrumental in her success at HOK, where she leverages both architectural knowledge and design skills to deliver custom, client-centered projects.

Early in her career, Samantha embraced a dual role as both consultant and designer—an uncommon opportunity that broadened her skills and perspective. She held this role for nearly eight years, managing projects across workplace strategy and change management. Her approach centers on stepping back to see the “big picture” before refining details, ensuring that each design aligns with the client’s needs, region, and industry.

In 2024, Samantha was honored as one of ASID’s “Ones to Watch,” a recognition of emerging leaders in the design industry. This accomplishment affirms her commitment to pushing the boundaries of design and setting new standards in workplace environments. For her, the COVID-19 pandemic marked a turning point, sparking what she describes as a “true renaissance” in workplace design—a shift toward creating warm, inviting spaces that foster a sense of belonging.

Philosophy

Samantha is passionate about mentoring the next generation of designers. She encourages students and young professionals to broaden their views, explore new skills, and build relationships. She advises them to “take the client on the journey,” emphasizing the importance of collaboration in design. Her approach to mentoring is rooted in the belief that the best results come from shared vision and mutual growth.
