Faizan Shafique, PhD
Assistant Professor
Faizan Shafique is a civil engineer by training and holds a master’s in engineering management and a PhD in construction management. He is also a certified Project Management Professional (PMP), a LEED Accredited Professional (LEED AP) and holds a Certificate of Management in Lean Construction (CM-Lean).
Faizan has taught diverse courses related to Project Management, Civil Engineering, Design, Surveying, Sustainability and Leadership. His research interests include Human Factors in Design and Construction, Sustainability, AEC Project teams, Leadership, Workforce Development, Education and Training. He also has multiple years of professional experience working as Coordination Engineer, Planning Engineer, and Contracts Manager.
Faizan has an interest in public speaking and storytelling. He served as a storytelling coach for Lansing State Journal. Some of his recognitions include a Fulbright scholarship, a Homer Higbee award (one of the most prestigious internal awards at Michigan State) and a Toastmasters District Championship of public speaking.
Teaching Philosophy
Faizan’s teaching approach has three main tenets: the 3 A’s of teaching: (1) Advancement – The instructor must remain up to date on the modern trends in industry and academia and reflect that in teaching; (2) Analytical Thinking: It is the duty of the instructor to create an environment of intellectual stimulation in the classroom, as well as ingrain it within the curriculum. (3) Assessment – A fair and well-designed assignment and grading policy can guide students’ attention to essential learning objectives.
Research Philosophy
Faizan’s research philosophy is rooted in the human-centered inquiry to address both technical and social challenges in design and construction. He draws inspiration from theories in the field of organizational psychology, sustainable development, Leadership and Education.
